Fourticq Specialty Labs
Also known as FSL, is my personal lab company. While I don’t have an LLC or a copyright, I try my best to make it as official as possible…which is hard when your office is your parents’garage.
Lab Overview
-
The space is very compact. It’s approximately 4 feet by 6 feet in my parent’s garage. The small size makes designing it ergonomically even more important.
-
Using various storage methods from pegboard to IKEA shelving, I have used every inch of space
Storage Racks
-
With plastic bins and labels, every item is easily identified
-
Every chemical is stored in labeled storage containers utilizing the Stanford EHS storage color and letter code standard.
Vent Hoods
-
Every part of this fume hood has been constructed using common parts found at Home Depot and on Amazon. I have plans I made and posted on my Reddit site. DIY Vent Hood Plans
-
This fume hood utilizes carbon scrubbers to neutralize vapors before they exit outside the garage. The plexiglass windows have withstood impacts by exploding glassware and have proven to be adequate protection .

Safety Equiptment
-
Conveniently hung personal protective equipment makes it simple to put on and encourages its use
-
Wall mounted fire blanket and eye wash allow for quick reaction in emergencies
Flammable Storage
-
Both flammable safety cabinets were created using steel mailboxes. This was much cheaper and convenient since the sizes fit underneath the fume hood
-
Both cabinets are double layered steel with an air gap and fire retardant seals that expand to seal any gaps
Sink
-
The use of buckets make this design very easy to construct
-
The separate bucket for clean and dirty water make transporting for refilling or emptying much easier and the faucet is hand made.

Lithium Peroxide
I created this as a way to absorb CO2 and produce oxygen for diving rebreathers and carbon capture devices.
Hydrobromic Acid
I created this as a way to make bromine compounds.
Bakelite
I made this out of a curiosity for polymers and early polymers like nitrocellulose.
Eosin Y Fentachek
This is an FSL original product created based on a research paper recipe for a colorimetric fentanyl detection liquid.
Capsaicin
I made this because I love spicy food and I wanted to make pure hot sauce to spice things up when I make salsa.
Hexamethylenetetramine
When making Bakelite I needed this for one of the reactions. Instead of buying some, I made it. I also can use it as a form of solid fuel.
