This guy loves science…

I have been experimenting since I was a wee lad. From baking soda and vinegar rockets to complex synthesis, I have continued my science journey into more and more complex experiments.

Presentations and Lab Plans

Chemistry Club 2022

Miles Fourticq-President

  • Lifesaving Explosions!

This lab focused on airbags and the chemistry behind this lifesaving explosion. I linked the project to student’s lives by discussing the importance of wearing a seatbelt. I highlighted the death of two people I know who lost their lives because they did not wear a seatbelts. We discussed how airbags work and then we did an experiment making our own airbags.

  • Breathing Fire!

This lab was all about how oxygen is generated in airplanes and submarines using combustion reactions. The lab portion was a scale model display I made using the same chemicals used in commercial applications.

  • The Science of Stink!

What makes stuff stink? And, what are some common reasons people want to intentionally make things stink? In this lab, we looked at compounds that humans perceive as smelling bad, what they are used in and and made Cadaverine from Lysine supplements.

Recent Inquiries…

  • Fentanyl Colorimetric Detection Drops

    Test Strip Instructions

With the rise in fentanyl deaths in Colorado, I have been experimenting with inventing a low cost system for detecting fentanyl. This is still in progress.

  • Emergency Escape Breathing Device

I am working on a 4-hour breathing apparatus that’s uses soda lime to remove CO2. These are used for firefighting and mine rescue. I am trying to make a prototype that is more modular so you can recharge it “hot swap” components.

  • Carbon Recapture System

Using CO2 absorbents like lithium hydroxide from used lithium batteries to recapture CO2. The idea would be to recycle used lithium batteries and use them to make a carbon capture device that could be scaled.

Homemade Innovations…

  • 5-gallon Bucket Scuba Helmet

My mom was surprised when she looked into the backyard and I had a 5-gallon bucket on my head with a hose my friend was pumping air into. Watch the video here.

  • Plastic Bin Luge

What can you do with moving blankets, a dolly, and a plastic bin? Make a bobsled of course! Watch this Olympic level bobsledding video here.

  • PVC H2O Homemade Fire Extinguisher

Fire extinguishers can be expensive, so I made this extinguisher from hardware store parts. Find out here.

  • DIY Escape Ladder

This contraption is a fire escape ladder for your bedroom made out of rope, garden hose, and a cereal box

  • Happy Mother’s Day Pegboard

Nothing says Mother’s Day like an organized garage

  • Bromine with Bros

Let’s just say me and my friends have a different idea of fun weekend activities. Bromine is dangerous, so this experiment was conducted outdoors, with safety equipment and with a lab partner for back-up.

  • Bake Some Bakelite

Chemistry is like baking… just dont eat the ingredients in this!

    See more photos here!

  • DIY Fume Hood

    Vent Hood Instructions

If you want your own lab, this is a great place to start. I also have lights installed in the interior that allow me to change the lighting for experiments that require specific light conditions.

  • Home Fire Suppression System

    Watch Video

    Burke Ryder & Miles Fourticq

This invention was a way to use two fire suppression chemicals at once for a home fire suppression system. Mixing the cooling power of liquid fire suppression agents with the fast acting power of powdered/gaseous agents.

  • Collapsable Barricade System

    Watch Video

    DJ Judge & Miles Fourticq

Millions of barricades are on the road every day helping control traffic and keep workers safe. Unfortunately, they are heavy and cumbersome to transport and to set-up. These full-size, collapsible NHTSA-compliant barricades are lighter and more compact. You could fit more in storage and on trucks, and save workers from injuries.

What People Are Saying

“It was my great pleasure to act as Miles’ crash test dummy and co-conspirator, and I wish him all the best in college.”
